How SSL Certificate Works

How SSL Certificates work

When you go to a website, you probably look for an icon that says "S" or a padlock. This icon indicates that a site is secured, which is good for privacy and online security. Understanding how SSL works is also crucial, particularly if you want to learn more about how your website and data can be protected from hackers.

The first step in how SSL works is to create an encrypted session key between the client and server. The key will be used by both the client and the server to encrypt information during the session.

In order to achieve this, the server and client need to exchange an initial set of information called a handshake. The handshake includes a list of ciphers, the highest SSL version supported by the host, information about the intermediate certificate, public key, and other details.

After this initial hello stage, both parties are ready to begin the symmetric encryption phase of the handshake. The client and server exchange a new key that encrypts data sent between them using the algorithm they agreed on during the hello phase.

The key used to encrypt this data can only be accessed by the server and client. This means that no one else will have access to it. It doesn't necessarily mean there aren’t any other ways to hack a system.

What Are Digital Certificates?

All digital certificates, irrespective of the type communication they secure rely on key pairs. In the case SSL certificates, a key pair called a "public key" and a "private key".

When someone receives a digital certificate, they can verify that it was issued by a certified authority (CA). These CAs have been established to be trustworthy and reliable and they typically include organisations like Symantec, Comodo and GoDaddy.

CAs usually check several criteria before issuing SSL Certificates. The CAs will check that the certificate has been approved by all major web browsers.

This is all easy to do with a browser. If these criteria are not met, the SSL connection is terminated and an error message appears in the browser.

Understanding Certificates

The public key can be viewed and used by anyone, but the secret key must remain hidden and safe. This is called public key infrastructure, or PKI for short, and it's one of the most important aspects of how SSL works.

The subject is complex, but not impossible to grasp. There are a number of online courses that teach you how to create and manage your own SSL certificates, and there are plenty of books and articles about them as well.

FAQ

Can I build my website using HTML & CSS?

Yes, you can! It is possible with basic knowledge of web design, programming languages like HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), CSS (Cascading style Sheets), and HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). These two languages allow you to create websites that can then be viewed by anyone who has access to your internet connection.

How to Make a Static Site

There are two options for creating your first website:

  1. Content Management System (a.k.a. WordPress): WordPress is available as a download. It can be used to create a website.
  2. A static HTML website is created by you. This is easy if you know HTML.

A professional may be able to help you create a large website.

You should start with option 2.

What is a website static?

A static site can be hosted anywhere. This includes Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage. Windows Azure Blob storage. Rackspace Cloudfiles. Dreamhost. Media Temple. A static website can be also deployed to any platform supporting PHP, including WordPress, Drupal and Joomla!, Magento, PrestaShop and others.

Static web pages are usually easier to maintain because they're not constantly sending requests back and forth between servers. Static web pages load faster since there are no requests between servers. Static web pages are better for small businesses that don't have enough resources or the time to maintain a website.

What is a static site?

A static website is a site where all content are stored on a server, and visitors can access it via web browsers.

The term "static" refers to the fact that there are no dynamic features such as changing images, video, animation, etc.

This site was originally designed for intranets. However, it has been adopted by small businesses and individuals who need simple websites with no custom programming.

Static websites are becoming more popular due to their ease of maintenance. They're easier to update and maintain when compared to a fully-featured website with many different components (such as blogs).

They also tend to load faster than their dynamic counterparts. This makes them great for those who have slow Internet connections or users with mobile devices.

Static websites are also more secure than dynamic ones. You can't hack into a static site. Hackers can only access the data contained in a database.

Two main methods can be used to create a static site:

  1. Utilizing a Content Management System.
  2. Create a static HTML website

Which one you choose depends on your requirements. A CMS is the best choice for anyone who is new to building websites.

Why? Because you have complete control over your website. A CMS means that you don't have to hire someone to set up your website. All you need to do is upload files to the web server.

Still, you can learn to code and create static websites. But you'll need to invest some time learning how to program.

Do I Need Any Technical Skills To Design And Build My Site?

No. It doesn't matter what HTML or CSS you know. You can easily find tutorials online that teach both HTML and CSS.

Which platform is best for designing a website?

WordPress is the best platform when it comes to designing websites. WordPress offers all the features needed to make a website professional looking.

Themes can be easily customized and installed. You can pick from thousands of free themes that are available online.

Plugins can be used to enhance functionality. These plugins enable you to add social media buttons and forms to your contact pages.

WordPress is also very user-friendly. You don’t need to know HTML code to edit your theme files. Simply click on an icon, and then select what you want.

There are many other platforms, but WordPress is my favorite. It has been around for years, and is still in use by millions.
